The police have announced a decision to file a case against former Member of Parliament Wimal Weerawansa in the Court of Appeal on charges of contempt of court.
This decision stems from a statement he made while addressing a public rally in the Anuradhapura area last September, in which he criticized a court order related to a case pending before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court No. 1.
An investigation was initiated following a written directive from Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanka Bodaragama to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) regarding the alleged contempt of court; as part of this probe, orders were issued to obtain unedited video footage of the full statement from seven major television channels that had broadcast it.
Accordingly, it is reported that video discs containing the relevant unedited footage have been secured and that an extensive investigation has been conducted, involving the recording of all evidence pertinent to the case. It is further stated that the files containing excerpts of the investigation notes and the DVDs featuring video footage of the statement have been submitted to the Colombo Magistrate’s Court No. 2 as a supplementary report accompanied by a summary of evidence, and have been handed over to the Registrar of the Court to facilitate the necessary legal steps for instituting proceedings against Wimal Weerawansa in the Court of Appeal.
