The Homagama High Court yesterday (09) sentenced a young officer to prison for misappropriating over Rs. 130 million (13 crore rupees) in bank funds by transferring the money into his personal account while serving as a chief cashier at a leading state bank in the country.
It is reported that the court ordered the 35-year prison sentence to be served over a period of 15 years.
The Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division had commenced investigations in May 2025 regarding the misappropriation of over Rs. 130 million from the bank by the 31-year-old chief cashier.
Following a complex trial involving the examination of evidence, Homagama High Court Judge Krishanthi Amaratunga delivered the final verdict. The first charge against the suspect was that, while serving as the chief cashier at this state bank in May 2025, he credited over Rs. 130 million to his personal account; the second charge involved crediting over Rs. 110 million to his personal account at the bank’s Dehiwala branch; and the third charge concerned the conversion of funds within the bank’s accounts into fictitious amounts through the use of software.
It is further reported that the accused has pleaded guilty to all three charges.
