Wasantha Samarasinghe, Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development, says that steps will be taken to introduce legal provisions to stop the use of toxic chemicals to ripen fruits.
He points out that the Consumer Affairs Authority has received many complaints regarding the sale of fruits ripened using toxic chemicals in the market.
Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe made this statement during a discussion held with the participation of officials of the Consumer Affairs Authority.
The Minister, who had stated that the use of such toxic chemicals in bananas, mangoes and plantains has become a major problem in society, stated that the next step will be to raid places where such toxic chemicals are used.
The Minister has also stated that if traders continue to use this method despite the relevant awareness campaigns, legal action will be taken in this regard.
This can be considered a very important beginning in creating a healthy society to prevent people from being exposed to large-scale adverse effects due to food.
