Her inspired spell included three wickets, along with a crucial run-out in the 50th over, as Bangladesh lost five wickets in just their final nine balls. Athapaththu’s performance helped Sri Lanka tighten their grip on the contest, placing her among the tournament’s standout bowlers so far. Her efforts proved decisive as Sri Lanka restricted Bangladesh to a modest total before sealing a convincing victory.
The Tigresses needed nine from the final over but lost four wickets in four balls to see their run chase collapse at the death. Nigar Sultana Joty and Sharmin Akhter gave Bangladesh a solid start with the bat, but they couldn’t carry their team to victory, ultimately ending Bangladesh’s chances of making the semi-finals.
For Sri Lanka, Hasini Perera led the charge with the bat, registering her maiden international half-century and top-scoring with an impressive 85 runs.
The win boosts Sri Lanka’s hopes of progressing in the group stage, with their captain once again leading by example on the world stage.
