Sri Lanka is facing a challenging period marked by severe weather, characterized by persistent heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides across many parts of the country.
Since late November 2025, multiple provinces-including the Western, Southern, and Central regions-have experienced significant precipitation, disrupting normal life and causing infrastructural damage.
According to recent reports by the Disaster Management Centre of Sri Lanka, the heavy rains have led to at least ten fatalities, primarily due to landslides in the Central Hill Country.
Additionally, several injuries have been reported, with over 3,000 residents affected by floods and approximately 250 homes damaged.
Emergency services and military units, including the Sri Lanka Air Force, have been actively involved in rescue and relief operations, responding to numerous calls for assistance in flood-stricken areas.
Meteorological authorities warn of continued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days as the northeast monsoon progresses, urging residents in flood and landslide-prone zones to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
The ongoing bad weather has also resulted in transportation disruptions, forced evacuations, and heightened risks to safety, prompting coordinated efforts between government agencies to assist the vulnerable and restore normalcy as soon as possible.
This situation underscores the significant impact of seasonal monsoon patterns on Sri Lanka’s terrain and population, alongside the urgent need for preparedness and resilient infrastructure.
