Breaking: Fifteen-Year Era Ends in Standoff
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has defied constitutional convention by refusing to resign from her post after her Trinamool Congress party suffered a catastrophic defeat in West Bengal’s 2026 Assembly elections. The political standoff marks an unprecedented moment in Indian democracy, with Banerjee’s 15-year rule ending not by her volition but through what experts call a constitutional impasse.

The BJP won 206 out of 294 seats-a two-thirds majority-marking the first time the party has won West Bengal state elections. Banerjee’s party, the Trinamool Congress, plummeted from 215 seats in 2021 to just 78–81 seats.
Governor’s Ultimatum and Possible Police Removal
West Bengal Governor RN Ravi has signaled that if Banerjee doesn’t voluntarily vacate the Chief Minister’s office, he would instruct police to remove her physically. Governor Ravi indicated the matter could escalate to the Supreme Court if the standoff continues unresolved.
Banerjee has stated she will not visit Raj Bhavan to submit her resignation, effectively testing the limits of constitutional authority.
Banerjee’s Claims: “Mandate Was Stolen”
“We have not been defeated. We have been beaten by conspiracy. The mandate has been stolen. Where does the question of my resignation come from?” Banerjee declared publicly, accusing security forces of rigging the election.
Her explanation for crushing defeat includes:
Allegations of massive rigging: She claims her party lost 100 seats through forceful manipulation
“Conspiracy” narrative: She frames the loss as an orchestrated attack rather than electoral outcome
Legal challenge promise: The TMC will contest results in court through election petitions
Unconstitutional win: She labeled BJP’s victory as “immoral win” achieved through manipulation
Banerjee’s Outburst Over Election Price Changes
NEW DELHI: In a surprise announcement, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee revealed that the Election Commission increased the price tag of certain pollutants by 10 times, allowing them to continue voting right before elections. She told India Today that the Election Commission “candidly admitted before me that we intended to rob you” of 100 seats.
Banerjee alleged that the EC “certainly robbed” TMC of at least 100 seats. The allegations, if substantiated, would represent one of the most serious charges of electoral malpractice in India’s democratic history.
Post-Election Violence: Four Dead
The political tension has already turned violent. At least four people were killed in post-election unrest across Kolkata and other districts on May 6, 2026.
- Casualties break down as:
- 2 BJP workers killed
- 2 TMC workers beaten to death
The violence erupted as results became conclusive, with clashes breaking out in multiple constituencies.
The Office: Constitutional Reality Check
Banerjee’s Assembly term expired today, May 7, 2026-exactly five years after the previous Assembly began on May 8, 2021. However, her constitutional position remains legally complex.
Constitutional provisions under scrutiny:
