Corruption Case Against Former Trade Minister Johnston Fernando Heard at Colombo High CourtA significant corruption case involving former Minister of Trade Johnston Fernando was heard today (October 22) before Colombo High Court Judge Mohammed Mihal.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has charged Fernando and two others—Eraj Fernando, former Chairman of the Sathosa Corporation, and Mohammed Sakeer, a former coordinating secretary—with causing financial losses to the government.
The accusations stem from Fernando’s tenure as Minister of Trade between 2010 and 2014, during which he allegedly removed around 150 Sathosa employees from their official duties and used them for his personal political activities in the Kurunegala district.
Despite not performing governmental work, these employees were reportedly paid salaries and allowances from state funds.
During the hearing, defense lawyers highlighted that four related cases covering the years 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014 have been filed, requesting the case be transferred to a different court to ensure fairness.
Deputy Solicitor General Wasantha Perera opposed this, stating there was no risk to a fair trial. Judge Mihal denied the defense’s request and scheduled the next hearing for December 17 after recording witness statements.
The Bribery Commission claims this misuse caused the government losses exceeding 40 million rupees (approximately 4 crores), categorizing it as a serious corruption offense.
This case is one of several high-profile corruption prosecutions initiated since the government change in 2015, reflecting ongoing efforts to hold public officials accountable.
Further proceedings will continue next month as the court examines witness testimonies relating to the allegations.
