According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary police investigations, two assailants arrived on a motorcycle posing as visitors seeking to have a document signed. They approached Chairman Wikramasekara and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene immediately.
Local authorities and staff at the council swiftly responded and transported Mr. Wikramasekara to Matara General Hospital. Despite urgent medical efforts, his injuries proved too severe, and he succumbed to his wounds.
This tragic incident comes amid previous warnings and public appeals made by Wikramasekara where he disclosed multiple death threats linked to criminal groups, calling for police protection over recent months.
