A severe fire has broken out in a multi-storey residential complex on Dabarē Mawatha in Narahenpita, and the blaze remains uncontrolled as of now.
Authorities have launched a large-scale operation to extinguish the fire and rescue trapped residents.
According to the Colombo Municipal Fire Brigade, 13 fire engines have been dispatched to the scene to combat the fire.
The fire originated on the fourth floor of the complex. Thick smoke and flames have trapped a significant number of residents on the upper floors.
The situation has worsened as emergency exits and evacuation routes have been blocked by the fire.
To safely evacuate those trapped, two specialized skylift vehicles capable of reaching higher floors have been deployed, and rescue efforts are actively ongoing.
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Initial reports confirm that one apartment has been completely destroyed.
Firefighters have rescued two children and a woman from this unit and have taken them to hospital for treatment.
Firefighters and police are working jointly in a continuous, intensive operation to bring the fire under control and free all those trapped inside.
